Decision-making approaches for optimal seismic/energy integrated retrofitting of existing buildings

Given the ambitious targets of carbon emission reduction set for very near future, it is now expected that retrofitting operations on existing buildings aim both at reducing their operational energy consumption and improving seismic performance. Indeed, well acknowledged that, if a sole efficiency upgrade provided to given building, in case an earthquake occurrence, double economic environmental losses will be experienced due lost investment repair activities post-earthquake damage. Moreover, social may also terms casualties, injured or homeless structural deficiencies structure. To aid thus process coupled seismic/energy renovation building stock, several multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches have been developed identification optimal solutions buildings. Such procedures typically consider range economic, social, technical, and, more recently, aspects are assumed interest decision makers (e.g., installation cost, duration works, architectural impact, need specialised workers, etc.). The present study demonstrates application case-study school two different MCDM approaches, which account vulnerability efficiency, as related impacts main differences between explored considered parameters corresponding weights, rankings options strategies.
